ESG
The NetScientific Group is uniquely positioned to play a major role in the environmental, social and corporate governance (“ESG”) and impact investment space, having traditionally been an investor in the core areas of healthcare around major chronic diseases for both therapeutics and diagnostics.
With the acquisition of EMV Capital, the Group also has capability and coverage of the sustainability area.
The Board of NetScientific is now working towards embedding ESG considerations into its business, with meaningful steps taken during the year in its operations, investment activities and portfolio companies.
Environmental Impact in the Investment Strategy
By going through potential portfolio company frameworks, NetScientific identifies ESG areas that may need improvement. The Group targets research projects and sector specific relationship programmes which provide pre-vetted, high environmental impact deal flow opportunities.
Portfolio Company Case Studies
SageTech Medical is specialised in the removal of harmful CO2 emissions from exhaled anaesthetic gases in hospital operating theatres and veterinary practices.
Inhalational anaesthetics are potent greenhouse gases (HFCs) whose emissions are not currently enforced under environmental regulations such as the UN’s Montreal Protocol and the EU’s F-gas Regulations because they are essential for medical use. Globally, the environmental impact is 3m tonnes of CO2e p.a.
SageTech has developed a patented process that captures, extracts and purifies inhalational anaesthetic agents. The company is also developing recycling technologies for these treated and purified inhalational anaesthetic gases.
The company’s technology captures exhaled waste anaesthetic gases in canisters attached to the exhaust stream of anaesthetic machines in operating theatres. SageTech is also developing the ability to capture from patients in recovery, thus improving the environment for staff and addressing current concerns that theatre and recovery staff’s exposure to volatile anaesthetic agents may breach Health and Safety Executive safe working environment limits.
Q-Bot insulation robots – how the latest in robotic technologies can save carbon emissions and money.
The next generation of underfloor insulation robots from Q-Bot are providing homeowners and landlords with significant cost savings, as well as driving down the carbon emissions from homes across the UK.
Q-Bot provides a fully accredited solution for underfloor insulation with suspended floors, making homes warmer while increasing energy efficiency without the hassle of alternative methods. Its unique solution has benefitted an estimated 6,000 people in the social and private housing market, resulting in significant reduction of cold draughts, heat loss through the floor and uneven temperatures.
Retrofitting existing buildings is essential to reaching net zero in the built environment. Residential homes are responsible for around 25 per cent of the UK’s CO2 emissions. Space heating is the largest single energy use in the UK, and accounts for over half of domestic CO2 emissions. According to Q-Bot’s case study of 100 homes where it installed underfloor insulation, each household cut its annual CO2 emissions by 700kg on average. This is the equivalent greenhouse gas (GHG) emission saving as driving over 1,700 miles in a car – like driving from London to Munich and back again.
Ventive designs and manufactures some of the most innovative intelligent building service systems in the UK, with an aim to create comfort without costing the Earth. From ventilation to heating and cooling, their ambitious team has already commercialized a few technologies and is well positioned to address the complexities of the Energy Transition with their new range of all-in-one home energy systems.
Ventive has the ambition to provide a healthy, comfortable and safe indoor environment intelligently and at a reasonable cost, also opening the opportunity to help demand energy management on aggregated scale. Their patented technique of Passive Ventilation with Heat Recovery (PHVR™) delivers 100% fresh air while reducing heat loss by up to 72%.
